Recently, in a speech earlier this month, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Napolitano, acknowledged the pressing need for a comprehensive immigration reform, while at the same time acknowledging that the Administration’s enforcement-only policy of the past 10 years was insufficient.
Secretary Napolitano also acknowledged that the United States has improved border security, which has been at the forefront of the minds of many citizens. She further recognized the need for American businesses to recruit and obtain qualified workers in a legal and responsible manner, and thereby strengthen the U.S. domestic economy, rather than having U.S. businesses set up shop abroad. Finally, she also emphasized that a workable Reform package must also take into account the lives of immigrant families, many of which are comprised of U.S. citizens and non-U.S. citizens alike, and that a workable reform is a work-in-progress which will command patience, as well as cooperation, in return for benefits coupled with responsibilities.
